Suspect in custody following standoff near Rona in Langford

Update: West Shore RCMP have safely taken a 36-year-old man into custody following a three-hour standoff near the Rona in Langford.

West Shore RCMP described it as a  “crisis situation”, involving a man who was armed with a gun near the corner of Langford Parkkway and Veterans Memorial Parkway.

A large area around Veterans Memorial Parkway was blocked off as police negotiated with the individual.

Several witnesses in the area said the man fired off one or two shots at the start of the situation.

According to Goldstream News, the man, who at various times was seated on the side of the road or parading down the street, engaged in several shouting matches with police. On a few occasions he appeared to taunt them.

West Shore RCMP said specialized police units were called in to assist, including the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team, the Police Dog Service and Crisis Negotiator Team, as well as B.C. Ambulance, were called upon for assistance.

RCMP say the investigation remains in its early stages, and they have not yet said what charges the man may face.
