Make Your Vote Count: Sooke Project Gaining Momentum

Share

The community of Sooke is rallying for funding in support of an all-weather turf field through the Aviva Community Fund and your support is needed.

Aviva is “investing in charitable community initiatives across Canada, protecting the people and things you love, supporting the causes you care about most, and strengthening your local community.”  The all-weather turf field in Sooke is just that type of initiative. One of the fields at Fred Milne Park – located next to the High School, on a public transit route and accessed by a multi-use trail – has been identified as location for the field.

The location is also home to the Sooke Soccer Club. The Club supports hundreds of local athletes and provides tournament space as a host venue for many out of city clubs. In doing so, the sport and field also have a significant impact on the local economy.

From the submission through the Aviva Fund website, “We are one of only two soccer clubs in Lower Island Soccer Association (LISA) without one. Getting a turf field would enhance our community by putting us on par with other Vancouver Island soccer clubs. The Sooke Community Association (SCA) and Sooke Soccer Club (SSC) are working hard to raise money to make this long awaited dream a reality. Project costs total $1.4M. Local governments have set aside 1 million dollars in gas tax for this project; we’ve raised approx. $20,000; we have broad in-kind support; and we are seeking funds to cover site preparation, new goals, nets, lights, etc. We anticipate breaking ground March 2017.

At time of posting, the “All-Weather Turf Field for Sooke” project had 15,892 votes – from our observation, a top contender.  Persons can cast up to 18 votes during the preliminary voting period – votes may be cast for a single or a combination of initiatives.  “The 30 ideas with the most votes in their idea category and funding level, including the top-ranked broker-supported idea, will go on to be finalists!”

This round of voting closes on October 28th. To support the “All-Weather Turf Field for Sooke” project, click here to vote.
