Kayakers, a sunset, and breaching orca whales… Talk about “Beautiful British Columbia!”

In a recent video uploaded to YouTube, Ken Heinrich captured a moment of peak west coast beauty.

A pod of orca whales breaching beneath the setting sun, apparently unperturbed by the nearby kayakers.

Dinner Time

The video starts off innocently enough, but four minutes in, we’re reminded of the orcas’ carnivorous nature.

At 4:30, a seal pops up and is immediately swarmed by the pod. Again, around 5:00, a seal briefly pops up for a breath, but an orca pulls it beneath.

The prolonged hunting process was likely a result of the orcas teaching their young to hunt. Orca calves usually stay with their mothers for the first two years of their lives.
