Barge carrying Johnson Street Bridge steel just squeezes beneath old bridge (VIDEO)

If ancient Egyptians could see how we move thousands of tonnes of steel, they’d probably be pretty impressed.

Regardless, the final shipment of steel squeezed into town at Point Shipyard last night, following it’s arrival at Ogden Point on Monday. It was a tight fit, as wooden portions of the bridge had to be reduced near the ocean to fit the barge.

The shipment included the bridge deck span, which is what cars and bikes will travel on, as well as the pedestrian and multi-use pathways.

The steel will now be cleaned and inspected for any possible damage during shipping.
