A Victoria man who had barricaded himself inside a multi-residence building Wednesday afternoon has been taken into custody.

The incident was reported just before 3 p.m. in the 1300-block of Hillside Avenue.

VicPD investigators arrived at a suite in the building as part of an investigation aimed at locating two people wanted on arrest warrants.

Police said one of the people involved, a Victoria man, was wanted on a Canada-wide parole revocation warrant. Officers identified who they believed to be the individual wanted on this warrant. When they requested the person come to the door, he refused.

At that time, officers believed both wanted parties to be in the suite.

“As the man refused to come out, out of an abundance of caution, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) was activated. Once in place, several attempts were made by our crisis negotiators to contact the suite occupants to give themselves up,” Victoria police said in a statement.

“These were ultimately unsuccessful and additional measures were used to help bring the parties out of the suite without harm.”

Man surrenders after 8 hours

Ultimately, the man gave himself up to officers and was taken into custody just after 11 p.m.

Officers searched the suite and discovered that the other person was not inside.

Investigators believe that person was not in the suite at the time of the incident and our attempts to locate that person are ongoing. There were no injuries.

At this time, our investigation into the circumstances as well as our efforts to locate the second wanted person are ongoing.

No one was injured during the incident. The Victoria man remains in custody on the warrant.
