Oak Bay PD lures in bike thief with strategically placed bait

Share

On Thursday, October 19th, Oak Bay PD’s School Liaison Officer, Cst. Lueder successfully arrested the person who’s been stealing bicycles from Oak Bay High School last week.

The officer placed a police mountain bike as bait near Oak Bay High School and lay in wait for several hours.

Finally, when the suspect showed up and started cutting the bike lock with his equipment, Cst. Lueder promptly made the arrest that will spell the end of the bike thief’s short-lived career.

“Our officers take their responsibility to protect Oak Bay personally and perhaps nobody
more so than our School Liaison Officer, Cst. Lueder,” says Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties. “He quietly rearranged his morning to enable him to spend a few hours on this ‘one-man
operation’. That’s the kind of commitment I see in him on a regular basis and I’m proud
to work with him.”

The police are recommending that the suspect be charged with attempted theft under $5000, mischief under $5000, possession of breaking tools, and possession of stolen property (credit cards, etc.)
