Share

Talk about Sunday Funday… or, Sunday “Rec” day, at least.

After a multi-million dollar renovation, Arena B at Panorama Recreation Centre officially re-opened on Sunday, October 15, 2017, with plenty of free entertainment and fun events for community members.

Activities included an opening ceremony followed by a free skate on the new ice surface. The event also included an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, road hockey, free skate sharpening and a visit from Panorama Recreation‘s own mascot, Slider the Penguin.

Renovation Comes Forty Years Into Building’s Lifespan

Arena B was part of the original recreation centre that was built in 1977. After four decades, the arena B floor reached the end of its service life and required replacement. Moore Wilson Architects was retained to carry out the design work. Construction commenced on April 3, 2017, and was completed on October 5, 2017.

“We were very fortunate to receive a $500,000 Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Grant to assist with this 2.2 million dollar project” said Wayne Ruffle, Chair, Peninsula Recreation Commission. “We are excited to showcase the new state-of-the-art floor and the many new arena features.”

New features include:

  • More energy efficient floor cooling system
  • Aluminum rink board frames for better flexing on player impact for added safety
  • 6′ high glass on the sides and 8’ high glass on the ends, (previously 4′)
  • Expanded player’s boxes, including raised platform for coaches
  • Realignment of the player box gates
  • Relocation and enhanced penalty and timekeeper’s box (larger size, heated, power source, data ports, internet, PA system)
  • New netting to full height of facility
  • New more efficient radiant spectator heaters
