Check out 60 spectacular creations from one salvaged tree at OneTree 2017 (VIDEO)

For over a century a gnarly old walnut tree watched over St. Charles Street in Oak Bay, observing the St. Charles Manor and overseeing its transition from a beautiful heritage home to an elderly care facility.

The black walnut was a spectator to every day life in Oak Bay, as the world moved from horses and carriages to automobiles and cell phones.

Alas, it was discovered that the great canopy and all of its splendor would have to be removed due to a large crack creeping its way up the tree.

In 2016 the decision was made to remove the tree for safety reasons, adding another tree to the long list of “future firewood.”

When one door closes, another one opens. The Robert Bateman Centre and Live Edge Design concluded that firewood would not be a fate fit for a tree as rich in character as St. Charles’ black walnut.

They decided to celebrate the life of the tree, and demonstrate the economic impact a singular tree can have when its potential artisan value is maximized.

Over 60 pieces of art worth over $100,000 were created, including 9 musical instruments, 23 pieces of furniture, 11 sculptures, and more. Art, an appreciation for the natural world, and fine local craftsmanship are all on display with the oneTree project.

Each piece will be available for purchase at the oneTree 2017 exhibit, with proceeds benefiting the Bateman Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focused on art and nature education.
