While today’s white Christmas has most of us on cloud nine, driving on icy roads can be a struggle for those unaccustomed to snow.
According to a CBC, Mainroad South Island Contracting are keeping us islanders safe by peppering the roads with about 4,000 tonnes of road salt.
Imported from Mexico
The type of salt used is particularly suited for Vancouver Island’s humid winters, and has to be shipped up from Mexico every year. It then gets used as road salt or brine.
Using a brine solution is often a quicker way to de-ice the roads, as rock salt needs to be crushed before it’s effective.
So rest easy, knowing that Vancouver Island is all prepared to take care of treacherous roads and icy streets this winter!
