Two Comox Valley students arrested in connection to high school closures

Share

Two students in the Comox Valley have been arrested for Uttering Threats after a safety scare led to the shutdown of three high schools on Thursday.

The threats originated from a photo posted to social media (above) that appeared to show two students brandishing guns.

After the RCMP determined that one of Comox Valley’s high schools wasn’t safe, Mark R. Isfeld, G.P Vanier and Highland High Schools were all shut down.

The closures forced approximately 3,000 staff and students to stay home.

Elementary schools were put under a “hold and secure” lockdown, but that was later lifted, shortly after 11 a.m.

Resolution to be determined

RCMP investigators will be liaising with Crown Counsel and School District #71, as to possible resolutions to Thursday’s events. The two students have been released to the care of their parents.

“We have a system in place to deal with matters such as this. This incident was able to show that the system works. School District #71 and the Comox Valley RCMP are able to collaboratively work together, keeping the Students and Staff safe,” stated Cst Rob Gardner, Comox Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer.

”We must take all threats seriously, and these investigations take time to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

The Comox Valley RCMP encourages anyone with information regarding this threat, or any threat in the future, to contact the Comox Valley RCMP immediately so that the information can be assessed and thoroughly investigated.
