Love, abuse, family, heartache, and humour – share the joys and pains of the Magrath sisters as they journey through life, in the University of Victoria Phoenix Theatre’s rendition of Crimes of the Heart.

Written by playwright Beth Henley, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play and Oscar-nominated screenplay is being brought to life in Victoria by celebrated director Peter McGuire.

For the students, by the students

Throughout his illustrious career, McGuire has leaned towards telling stories that involve strong female characters dealing with the ups and downs of familial relationships – a tendency that has no doubt been influenced by his own experience growing up with five sisters.

His latest project is no different – McGuire picked Crimes of the Heart specifically because it contains roles that would be perfect for some of his theatre students at UVic, while also featuring tons of dark humour.

“Story-telling is so important. It is crucial that we gather as a community and hear each other’s stories, especially in the time of social media, and theatre is a perfect way to do that,” says McGuire.

A 70’s tale that stands the test of time

Crimes of the Heart may have been written about 40 years ago, but the bonds of sisterhood are timeless and universal.

Its underlying themes of abuse, abandonment, mental health, and female empowerment are also incredibly relevant to today’s society, which makes it doubly important that this story be told and heard.

But don’t take our word for it – go check it out for yourself! The show is on for several days between February 13th and 24th, so pick a night and immerse yourself in the story of a lifetime.
