Haahuupayak Elementary School in Port Alberni has closed for the remainder of the week following the death of a student.

The school principal Wayne Peterson posted a notice on Facebook informing parents of the closure.

“Out of respect for the family who has lost a loved one, we will be closing the school leading into spring break… The student was part of the Haahuupayak family. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family in their time of need,” wrote Peterson.

Investigation Underway

RCMP were called home at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday after a report of a six-year-old child in medical distress.

Paramedics rushed the child to hospital, but the six-year-old passed away.

Investigations are underway by the Port Alberni RCMP and the BC Coroner’s Service.

The RCMP say the public is not at risk.
