Rare sperm whale spotted off the coast of Nanaimo (PHOTOS)

A sperm whale that was sighted near Alert Bay back in February has just resurfaced online once more.

Spotted by researchers John Ford, Brianna Wright, and Eva Stredulinsky, the whale nicknamed ‘Yukusam’ was out and about in the waters near Nanaimo this week.

According to a Facebook post by Ocean Wise Marine Mammal Research Program, Yukusam is the first sperm whale sighted in this area, other than acoustic detection in 1984.

So if you’re taking in the fresh sea air between Vancouver Island and the mainland, keep an eye out – these majestic creatures can easily be injured by vessels when they rest on the surface of the water for long periods of time.
