Five youth were sent to the hospital with various injuries following a single-vehicle rollover collision in Oak Bay on Thursday night.
Oak Bay police were called to the scene on Beach Drive around 11:18 p.m. Officers initially believed the crash to be fatal based on its appearance.
“Fortunately they were all seat-belted, and fortunately they had a sober driver,” Ray Bernoties of Oak Bay PD said in a statement to Victoria Buzz. “We’ve got five local youth with various states of injuries but they survived.”
The vehicle slammed into a light pole then continued on and took out a fire hydrant.
Though no charges were brought forward, there could still be some pending on the driver given the nature of the scene. Police will be undergoing a reconstruction of the crash to determine what factors led into it.
Bernoties says this time of year often becomes a more dangerous season on the road as youth start to finish up with school.
“I would use this accident as a discussion point with youth over dinner, and maybe even reflect on it as adults,” Bernoties says.
