GoFundMe launched for BC Ferries employee injured in accident

A GoFundMe launched in support of a BC Ferries employee who was injured during a training exercise has surpassed its goal in a matter of weeks.

David Stone was one of two employees who fell into the water in Swartz Bay during a rescue boat drill on April 18.

Stone is a single father of two and is their primary provider. So the BC Ferry & Marine Workers’ Union (BCFMWU) started the GoFundMe with a goal of $2,500 to help him out while he recovers.

It’s now raised $2,755 as of Saturday, May 12.

In an update dated five days ago, the BCFMWU wrote that Stone “wishes to extend his utmost appreciation for everyone that has reached out to him with well wishes and support.”

Following the accident, Stone spent a week in the ICU and trauma ward at Victoria General Hospital.

Since being released, he’s had to return twice to the ER to address complications from his injuries, which include fractures in his knee, his vertebrae, six broken ribs, and a punctured lung.

The update says Stone still has a long recovery ahead of him, but that he is hoping to get back out and attend his kid’s softball games as soon as possible.
