It’s starting to feel a lot like summer! All the good weather means so much more to do in and around Victoria! Whether it’s celebrating African Culture or coming out with Victoria Buzz at our Family Fun Run and Touch-A-Truck, there’s something for everything this weekend!

Saturday, May 26th

African Cultural Week & AfriCa Fest

What: Africa Cultural & Fashion Week’s Mission is to bring people together by preserving our African Roots through unique and beautiful cultural garments.
May 26 will be all about cultural awareness and bringing the community together as one.
The highlighted elements will be focused on Music (DJ), Rhythms, Food & Cultural awareness!
Where: Greater Victoria Library, Central Branch Courtyard

Cost: This is a FREE by donation event but, food and crafts will be on sale

The James Bay Community Market

What: The James Bay Market is a vibrant community farmers market located at the corner of Menzies and Superior Street in the heart of James Bay. You will still find yourself surrounded by a bounty of fresh local produce and farm goods, beautiful and unique artisan crafts and fresh ready-to-eat foods.
You will love the fine handcrafted wood items, whimsical home décor and naturally crafted body products. We also have top-quality traditional baked goods, speciality sauces and seasonings and dried soup mixes. Hungry? You will find prepared food you can eat right on site in our picnic area. We also have a vast array of farm-fresh products from farm-fresh meats to seasonal veggies and fruits.

Fairfield Repair Cafe

What: Have something needing repair? Bring them out to this event and we will fix them for free. This is an event for anyone with something needing repair, or just want to learn how to fix. Also those who want to help repair or volunteer in some other way are invited. So come out and save your money, save your favourite items, save our landfills and save the world! They can typically repair most things including furniture, appliances, electronics, clothes and fabric goods, knitted goods, toys, tools, bicycles, knife sharpening, etc. Sometimes, they even have specialized expertise to fix hearing aids, computers and help you work your cell phone.

Amaryllis’ SPCA Bake Sale

What: This Annual event started 6 years ago (when Amaryllis was only 7) because she wanted “to do something to help the animals”, and every year since, Amaryllis, her family and friends bake up a storm and the community comes together to help animals in need. So far they’ve have raised over $7100!!
Come and load up on yummy treats for everyone in your family…even the 4 legged ones. We will have sweet treats as well as yummy home baked artisanal bread. All funds raised will go directly to the SPCA Victoria branch to help take care of animals.

Happy Birthday Robert!

What: This May marks Robert Bateman’s 88th birthday and the 5th anniversary of the Robert Bateman Centre! To celebrate, all admission costs will be by donation on May 26th!! Join one of the 45 minute Public Tours at 10:00am or 2:00pm where one of their tour guides will lead you through the gallery sharing all the hidden stories behind Robert’s art. A special guided Curatorial Tour of our current temporary exhibit Bateman’s Beginnings will begin at 12 noon for those looking to experience Robert’s impressionistic past. Don’t forget to sign the birthday card for Robert!

Vic West Fest

What: Come on out and meet fellow neighbours, while enjoying the festivities! There’ll be plenty of activities, music, food, and a beer garden- planned for later in the afternoon! Children’s Activities Run 2-6PM, and the Beer Garden runs 5:30-9PM

Cool Aid’s Homecoming 50th Anniversary Gala

What: Homecoming is designed as a reception and mingling event with a variety of areas to explore and hang out at “Cool Aid House” they are creating under a big, see-through, heated tent, including some very special “rooms” for the occasion. After wandering down the red carpet, grab a drink and nibbles in the kitchen, relax in the living room and enjoy the fresh air on the patio. As well as stand-up spaces, plenty of seating and tables will be available in a variety of configurations for eating and relaxing with friends old and new. Heaters will be ready in case of any nippiness in the air.

Stand UP for this Ability

What: This comedy show shines the spotlight on all abilities – especially the ability to make you laugh. A few performers have experience but most will be making their Stand Up comedy debuts – all are talented and funny! Showcasing participants in Kirsten Van Ritzen’s Stand Up comedy class, her session was open to everyone and focussed on finding the humour in challenges everyone face – whether a physical disability, a mental health struggle, or anything that makes us feel different. If that doesn’t sound hilarious … these awesome folks will prove you wrong!

Victoria Literacy Connection Invites You to Retro Bash for Literacy

What: Featuring the lively 60s and 70s tunes of the 6 piece Palamos Project Cover Band, the Retro Bash for Literacy will be a lively dance fun-raiser for the Victoria Literacy Connection.
Free snacks, cash bar, door prizes will make this a fun evening. The Victoria Literacy Connection is the merger of Literacy Victoria and the Victoria READ Society.

2018 Mighty Metchosin Garage Sale

What: Sale both days and Auction on Saturday. Come and browse through the big tents for furniture, electronics, sporting goods, yard goods, tools, house wares, collectibles, antiques and “mystery stuff”. Be sure to participate in the silent auction inside the Community House for a chance to get some of the choicest donations. Items will be auctioned off on Saturday.

St. George’s Spring Fair

What: St. George’s Annual Spring Fair is a wonderful day for the whole family! There will be a bouncy castle, scavenger hunt, cake walk, bottle toss, and of course, The Amazing Dog Show (bring your canine friend and show-off their skills!). They’ll also have some great sales, including our annual Plant Sale (beside the Community Garden behind the church), Book Sale (in the Lower Hall), and Bake Sale (by the food in the parking lot). For the hungry, they’ll be selling hot dogs and our Ismaili friends will have their wonderful samosas.

Summer Plant Sale!

Spaw Day

What: Warm weather makes us want to be outdoors! We are kicking off the season with our first Spaw Day of the year! Nail trimming by donation from Diamond Dogs Grooming in support of Flirting with Fido dog rescue! All donations go directly to Flirting with Fido and they will be bringing a number of their adorable adoptable doggies to meet!

Decades Of Rock Fundraiser

What: Come and dance the night away to music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with Decades Of Rock and help raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. There will be a silent auction, 50/50 and other fun raffles. Grilled To The Mac food truck will be onsite serving up some delicious food so come with an appetite.

Victoria Flying Club Community Day Open House

What: The Victoria Flying Club invites aviation enthusiasts young and old to its ramp at the Victoria International Airport on Saturday, May 26th for its annual Community Day and Open House. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour this modern day historic 80 year old facility and learn about the rich history and planes that have made their home there. Several Flight Instructors will be ready and available to share the joy of flight with visitors in the Redbird FMX flight simulator or on a Discovery Flight. Vintage and modern planes will be open for viewing on the ramp, some even for sale. Career-minded individuals can bring their questions and talk with Flight Instructors about study plans.

Victoria Buzz 1K Family Fun Run at Touch a Truck

What: This May, we’re inviting you to a one-of-a-kind, 2-in-1 family-friendly event that you won’t want to miss.
When you bring your kids out to the annual Touch a Truck event, you’ll also have the opportunity to register for the first ever Victoria Buzz 1K Family Fun Run!
This year, we’re partnering up with Touch a Truck and BC Children’s Hospital to bring you a 1K run at the event – keeping it short and sweet so that everyone can take part!
Besides offering a healthy, family-friendly contest, the fun run is aimed at raising funds for the BC Children’s Hospital.
You’ll also have the opportunity to win amazing prizes when you register for the run! Plus, once you raise $100, you’ll automatically win a free Touch ATruck t-shirt, and additional entries to win prizes for every consequent $100 raised.

Fort Street Rollout

What: The Fort Street Roll Out will take place from 11am – 2pm and will feature live music, family activities, interactive stations, safety ambassadors, photo station and free bicycle rentals.
The Roll Out will feature activities on each block with a “passport” designed to encourage walking and cycling on the corridor. Visit stations to get a stamp and enter to win one of four new bicycles and other draw prizes thanks to our partners at Fabulous Fort, the DVBA and PARC Retirement Residences.

2018 Selkirk Waterfront Festival
