The city’s continued push to build a city-wide bike lane network appears to be unpopular, as suggested by a recent poll of Victoria Buzz readers on Facebook.
76% of readers voted ‘No’ in response to the question, “Do you support the construction of the Victoria bike lane network that is currrently underway?” A total of five and a half thousand readers voted over a five-day period.
While the poll isn’t a strictly scientific survey of the Greater Victoria population as a whole, it paints a stark picture of what’s become a contentious issue for many in area.
Still, construction of the lanes is set to continue, as the city recently voted to proceed with plans for additional lanes on Humboldt and Wharf Street.
The city also hosted its Fort Street Rollout event last Sunday, marking the opening of the latest addition to the city’s bike lane network.
While the lane has been criticized for interfering with businesses along the corridor, public response at the event appeared to be generally positive.
That’s exactly why we’re building the network! ❤️
