The victim of Saturday’s fatal car crash on the Malahat has been identified as 46-year-old David Tilley from Vancouver.

Tilley was pronounced dead at the scene after a two-vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Highway just north of Aspen Road around 1 p.m.

Several drivers stopped at the accident scene to perform CPR on Tilley.

He is the son of former St. John’s city councillor, Bruce Tilley, and is survived by his wife Justine Tilley, who was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The female driver of the northbound vehicle was also transported to hospital with injuries and is being investigated for impaired driving.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this fatal collision, and police investigators are gathering evidence as to the level of impairment of the female driver and any driving evidence observed by witnesses,” said Cpl. Chris Dovell.

Sheilagh O’Leary (current St. John’s city councillor) and Leslie White (family member) were among many who posted their condolences on social media following the tragic incident.

My sincere condolences go out to former council colleague Bruce Tilley and to his family on this tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. https://t.co/VmOE71NKcs
