Free Summer Concerts in the Park season kick-off: Victoria Soul Gospel Choir

What: Bring a blanket and picnic, and enjoy the free music in a beautiful setting! The dynamic and high-energy Victoria Soul Gospel Choir delivers the sounds of Motown, R&B, Gospel, and Reggae in five-part harmony with choreography that will make you want to get up and dance!
The Victoria Soul Gospel Choir are a no-audition choir of all ages, ethnicities, and beliefs who simply love the joy of experiencing this music together. The enthusiastic director, Checo Tohomaso, has performed with Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, and the Commodores, and he brings that authentic Motown sound to the music. Get ready for a positive vibe that lifts the spirits!

Celebrate Canada Event

What: Come to the Free Celebrate Canada Event on the front lawn of the Oak Bay Municipal Hall.Free family fun returns to the Municipal Hall lawn to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Music, games, bouncy castle, and birthday cake are all part of the celebration!

The Paparazzi Pageant

What: Entertain Them! Shock them! Make them laugh! Hypnotize tbe ! But, most of all, leave them panting for more!
All those interested can pick up an entry form from a bartender anytime during business hours, and there is no entry fee.
You will be judged in the following categories:
• Talent
• Stage presence
• Attire…
• Ease and comfort during a question-and-answer session that will tell our panel of qualified judges if you have the stuff to represent Paparazzi and the LGBT community in a professional, fun manner, both at the nightclub and at other venues during the next 12 months.

The Jerry Douglas Band plus Marc Atkinson Trio

What: 14-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas is to the Dobro (resonator guitar) what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar by reinventing the instrument in countless ways. This forward-thinking artist incorporates elements of bluegrass, jazz, blues, rock and Celtic into his musical vision. He is best known as a key member of Alison Krauss and Union Station since 1988. Douglas’ distinctive sound graces 1500+ albums, including discs released by Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Ray Charles. He recently received a Grammy Nomination for “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.” A true pioneer in American Music.

Beatback

What: his trio is made up of storytellers who travel from spacious valleys to funky marshlands with the sole-goal of whisking jazz into a new kind of froth. They perform both instrumental and vocal songs, receiving inspiration from John Scofield, Bill Withers and Wes Montgomery. Through their 20 month stay at the Empress, their sound has congealed into something that is exciting, dynamic and not to be missed!
