One person is dead following a head-on crash on the Malahat Saturday afternoon.

The crash occurred on the Trans Canada Highway just north of Aspen Road around 1 p.m.

Police say the male driver of a southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Witnesses believe the couple appeared to be in their 40s.

The female driver of the northbound vehicle was also transported to hospital with injuries.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this fatal collision, and police investigators are gathering evidence as to the level of impairment of the female driver and any driving evidence observed by witnesses,” said Cpl. Chris Dovell.

Highway 1 was temporarily closed Saturday afternoon and fully reopened around 6 p.m.

The West Shore RCMP traffic unit and the RCMP South Island traffic services collision analyst are investigating.
