Nanaimo youth arrested after stealing from seniors at a care facility

A male youth was arrested after he broke into a senior’s care facility in Nanaimo and stole several items last week.

The incident occurred on Friday, June 8th at around 4:10 a.m. and was reported to RCMP by one of the residents who woke up the next morning and realized someone had been in their room overnight.

At the time, police reviewed video surveillance and discovered that the masked youth had first tried to get in through the front doors of the central Nanaimo facility.

After failing to gain entry, he went around the side of the building and climbed into several suites through unlocked ground-level windows.

RCMP were able to identify and arrest the suspect with help from the public. The incident is currently being investigated and no formal charges have been laid yet.

“We felt it was prudent to advise the public of the arrest in order to lessen any lingering concerns that senior’s facilities were being targeted,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Investigators believe this was an isolated incident. Having said that, it is also an excellent time for local senior’s facilities to review their existing security measures to ensure the continued safety of residents in their care.”
