Here’s your official invitation to a relaxing day of golf and family fun time, all in support of a truly worthy cause.
The 2018 Larry Orr Charity Golf tournament will be held at Bear Mountain Resort, with all proceeds going to KidSport—a not-for-profit organization that provides grants that help remove financial barriers that prevent children from playing organized sport.
The choice of charitable organization reflects the lifelong legacy of Larry Orr, the namesake of the event.
Mr. Hockey and his contribution to the Saanich Peninsula
Before his death in 2015, Larry Orr was a staple in the North Saanich community, beloved by every child and parent who ever had anything to do with hockey.
Orr started out sharpening skates in his garage—a job that quickly became his favourite pastime, as well as that of countless children who passed through his home.
They never left without a smile, a few pieces of Double Bubble gum, and safe, reliable hockey gear—because besides sharpening skates, Larry also ran a free equipment exchange program out of his garage to ensure that every kid had the tools necessary to score (or save) that crucial goal.
Skate gear expert, friend, and even father figure – Larry was loved by every player he helped nurture, including NHL stars Jamie Benn and Jordie Benn.
“He was the father figure of the peninsula,” said Jordie Benn. “Whenever you drove up to the rink and saw his minivan in the parking lot it put a smile on your face to know Larry was at the rink and you could talk to him. Every time me and Jamie are back we go see Larry quite a bit, just go sit in his house and hang out and just talk. Larry and his wife Sandy are really special people.”
The event
The 3rd annual Larry Orr Charity Golf Invitational therefore aims to celebrate the life and legacy of a man who was a fixture in the North Saanich community.
It looks to carry on his mission to make sure that every child is able to take part in a sport they love, by donating to a charity that does just that.
Over the past two years, this event has raised a whopping $31,751 and promises to be bigger and better than ever before.
Besides a day of golfing, you can look forward to a tee gift, several contests and draws, a silent auction, buffet dinner, and more!
