Port Alberni RCMP still investigating case of missing father and son

Update: Based on Jan Stelmaszyk’s Instagram profile, it appears that he is in fact travelling overseas with his son.

Earlier: Police are still attempting to contact a Port Alberni man and his son, who were both reported missing earlier this week, after a social media post suggested they were in Italy.

35-year-old Jan Stelmaszyk and his three-year-old son Matt Bartnik were reported missing on Thursday after they failed to contact family members for four days.

The pair were on a camping trip and were believed to be somewhere on Vancouver Island.

On Friday, Stelmaszyk posted a photo on Instagram with a caption implying they were safe, but appeared to be posted from Italy.

In a statement, Port Alberni RCMP said they are working to confirm Stalmaszyk’s location.

“Investigators are aware that there are claims on social media advising that the individuals we are searching for are okay, but out of the country,” police said.

“Our efforts right now are to conclusively confirm that information on social media is accurate. In order to conclude a missing person’s investigation we do need to speak directly with the individual and ensure all is well.”
