12 things to do in and around Victoria this weekend, August 25th – 26th

It’s dark outside, but not because of the smoke. Looks like the weekend might bring some of that promised rain after all!

Stay dry or get a little wet, at these # amazing events this weekend:

Saturday, August 25th

Roller Skate Victoria’s Retro Roller Disco

  • What: Get your roller skates, short shorts, bell bottoms and sequinned tops on and travel back in time with Roller Skate Victoria’s Retro Roller Disco! This event is 19 plus and sponsored by The Moon Under Water Brewery, Pub, Distillery & Tasting Room and Merridale Cidery & Distillery who will have beer and cider for $5. There will also be a dance floor if you want to boogie without wheels!
  • When: 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.
  • Where: Archie Browning Sports Centre, 1151 Esquimalt Rd
  • Admission: $20. Available online. 

Salish Sea Lantern Festival

  • What: The 4th Annual Salish Sea Lantern Festival hosted by ArtSea, featuring the SENĆOŦEN Singers, live music (Holly Artzen & Kevin Wright), face painting, balloon twisting, bubbles, and the show of extraordinary hand-made creative lanterns. Suitable for children of all ages.
  • When: 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
  • Where: Sidney’s Beacon Park Bandshell

Westshore Rebels vs VI Raiders

  • What: It’s the Alumni Appreciation Night game! There will be food trucks, cold delicious beer from Red Arrow Brewing, and lot’s of fun and prizes! There will also be a sign-up sheet at the box office to enter an Alumni draw for great prizes throughout the game and we will be having an Alumni photo on the field at half-time.
  • When: 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Where: Westhills Stadium, 1089 Langford Pkwy
  • Admission: $15. Available online or at the gate.

The Big Squeeze 

  • What: The Big Squeeze is Victoria’s First EVER Lemonade Stand Competition! On either Saturday, August 25th, teams will set up a lemonade stand at any location and sell lemonade by donation to BBBS. The business creates their own unique recipe (blue raspberry lemonade, peach lemonade, iced coffee lemonade, the possibilities are endless!) and compete with other participants for Best Tasting and Most Creative Recipe.
  • When: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Where: Various locations around town

Rock Bay Murals Launch Party 

  • What: Peruse the new murals in Rock Bay created by local Victoria artists as you jam out to some incredible West Coast tunes. This free event is hosted in partnership with the City of Victoria, Victoria Beer Week Society & Garden City Electronic Music Society. It will feature live performances from Bridal Party, Diamond Cafe, Teenage Wedding, Lovers Touch, and more!
  • When: 2 p.m. – 12 a.m.
  • Where: Hoyne Brewing Company, 2740 Bridge Street
  • Admission: Free

Saturday Moss Street Market

  • What: Like every summer Saturday, the corner of Moss Street and Fairfield Road will once again come to life with scores of local farmers, artisans, bakers, and brewers setting up their tents. Along with these delicious scents, the air will be filled with the vibrant sounds of live music, laughter, and jovial conversation. The market is entirely family friendly as it includes tents for lunches, coffee, and even a special kids’ activity tent.
  • When: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Where: 1330 Fairfield Rd
  • Admission: Free

Beach Food Fridays & Saturdays

  • What: Great food and live music by the ocean! Get out and active in the fresh air and enjoy Colwood’s beautiful seaside community. Pull up a log and have dinner at the beach with live local music, followed by a stroll along the beach or a splash in the ocean. It’s an easy-going event in the most beautiful rustic setting  Find the fun by the welcome sign on Ocean Boulevard near Lagoon Road every Friday and Saturday. Food trucks are there between noon and 7pm, music starts at 5pm! (weather permitting)
  • When: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Where: Esquimalt Lagoon

Ratfish Comedy Show at Victoria Fringe Festival 2018

  • What: Everything that made RATFISH Victoria’s favourite local comedy show for 7+ years, all jammed into less than an hour. Amazing hosts, The Band, surprise guest performers, hilarious headliners, Roast Battles, and more. Even Open Mic spots… You (yes, YOU!) can sign up at the show for a chance to grab a 3-minute spot to perform your own original comedy at The Fringe!

Sunday, August 26th

Vancouver Island Feast of Fields

  • What: Feast of Fields is a three hour wandering gourmet harvest festival that highlights the connections between farmers and chefs, fields and tables, and between farm folks and city folks. With a wine glass and linen napkin in hand, guests stroll across a farmer’s field, traveling from tent to tent (sometimes through the barn, past the tractor or around the chicken coop) listening to live music, and tasting gourmet creations from BC top chefs, farmers, fishers, ranchers, food artisans, vintners, brewers, distillers and other beverage producers.

Sidney Sculpture by the Sea

  • What: The Sidney BIA, in collaboration with the Mary Winspear Centre, the Sidney Museum, and the Vancouver Island Sculpture Guild, is pleased to announce Sidney Sculpture by the Sea, a two-month contemporary sculpture display that features more than 30 artists and close to 100 pieces of art.
  • When: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Where: Mary Winspear Centre, Sidney Museum, and The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea

100.3 the Q! Bed Races on Beacon 2018

  • What: A high-octane, fun-packed family event. Watch 12 teams race hospital beds down Beacon Avenue. Costumes, prizes, music, food and fun guaranteed! The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation raising funds for the Peninsula Youth Clinic.
  • When: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Cube of Truth: Victoria

  • What: Hosted by Anonymous for the Voiceless, the Cube of Truth is a peaceful static demonstration akin to an art performance. This demonstration operates in a structured manner that triggers curiosity and interest from the public; the group attempts to lead bystanders to a vegan conclusion through a combination of local standard-practice animal exploitation footage and conversations with a value-based sales approach. Masks, signs, and outreach literature are provided. Black upper clothing appropriate for the weather is essential, and please bring a fully charged laptop or tablet if you have one.
