A young man has been arrested and charged in the accidental shooting death of a Salt Spring Island teenager last September.

In the early hours of Sept 24, 2017, police responded to a residence on Salt Spring Island for a report of a shooting.

When police arrived they found six youths present, including 17-year-old Alistair Hayne who was suffering from a gun shot wound. He was transported to hospital with life threatening injuries, where he later died.

Hayne was a student at Gulf Islands Secondary School.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit was called in to investigate the incident and deemed the shooting to be accidental at the time.

Police could not release the name of the man charged because he was a youth at the time of the offence. He faces one charge of manslaughter and appeared in court Wednesday.

“We understand that this investigation has greatly impacted all involved. These events always have a profound impact on families and communities, said Insp. Dave Hall of VIIMCU.

“Our thoughts are with them, as we work to prepare for future court proceedings.”

No further information can be released as the matter is now before the courts.
