A 21-year-old driver is facing criminal charges after an incident that left an 11-year-old girl with critical and ultimately life-changing injuries.

On Wednesday, December 20th, 11-year-old Leila Bui was on her way to attend classes at Arbutus Middle School when she was struck by an SUV at the crosswalk on Ash Rd and Torquay Dr.

As a result of the crash, Leila Bui suffered massive brain injuries and went through multiple surgeries over six months in the hospital before being able to return home.

Saanich police have charged the driver of the SUV, Tenessa Rayann Lyric Nikirk from North Saanich, with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, after gathering substantial evidence about the incident.

Nikirk is expected to appear in Victoria Provincial Court on November 7th.
