U-Bicycle will soon require passengers to drop off bikes at designated locations

Victoria’s bike-share company, U-Bicycle, is about to move to a new path.

Starting November 1st, passengers will no longer have the option to drop off their bicycles wherever they want as long as they’ve locked the wheel.

Instead there will be 120 virtual drop zones in the city where they will be required to park the rented vehicle.

However they will still be able to temporarily park the bikes in case they need to make a short stop during the trip. The user’s account will continue to be charged unless they end their rides at designated drop zones.

These zones have bike racks from which users can pick up a new bike or drop off the one they’ve just used. The bike will automatically detect when it is within 10m of a drop zone.

According to the company website, the change is due to an agreement with the City of Victoria and had been planned from the start.

The company is also asking users for recommendations for where they should put the drop-zones by filling out this survey.

U-Bicycle first launched in Victoria in October 2017. Since then, the green bikes have been spotted all around the city.
