The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has taken over an investigation of a fatal police-involved shooting in Shawnigan Lake.

According to Shawinigan Lake RCMP, the incident occurred shortly after noon on Saturday at a residence in the 1100 block of Mill Bay Road. Officers entered a home with the intention of arresting a man in relation to an assault investigation.

Upon entering the home, officers encountered a man who, they say, advanced on them with, “an edged weapon.”

Attempts were made to subdue the suspect with a taser. However, when that failed, the man was subsequently shot by an officer and rushed to hospital where he later died.

Friends and family have identified the man as Chris Bloomfield. He lived in the residence with his mother.
