Visitors of downtown Victoria may have noticed a new flag waving on the horizon today.

Métis and provincial government members gathered in front of the B.C. parliament building to erect a Métis flag to celebrate the proclamation of Louis Riel Day, today, November 16th.

Louis Riel (1844-85) was a Métis political leader who played a key role in the Canadian Confederation. A somewhat controversial figure, he was an advocate for Métis rights and culture, and encouraged diversity and inclusivity in Canada.

“The many Métis people who call B.C. home are an important part of the fabric of Indigenous culture and communities in this province,” said Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation in a press release

“I’m delighted to mark Louis Riel Day. Listening to and honouring the voices of Métis people is a crucial step on our shared journey toward true reconciliation.”

He is also considered the founder of the province of Manitoba.

“Today, we commemorate the life of Louis Riel, a dedicated Métis leader, politician, and the founder of the province of Manitoba,” said Prime Minister Trudeau in a statement today.

“As we continue to strengthen our relationship and build on our efforts of reconciliation, I encourage Canadians to reflect on the important contributions of the Métis people. We recognize the vital role they have played – and continue to play – in building Canada.”
