Victoria student activists shoot music video to promote Proportional Representation (VIDEO)

Share

A small group of local activists have created a music video set to ABBA’s “The Winner Takes it All” in order to raise awareness about the current referendum on electoral reform.

UVic student Caleigh Aalders, who conceived of and directed the video alongside Political Science student Eleanor Teel , said the idea for the video started as a joke.

While working with the campaign for proportional representation, she kept hearing the phrase “the winner takes it all” in regards to the First Past The Post voting system. She couldn’t get the identically-titled song out of her head.

Aalders sees the referendum as “our opportunity to change the system.” This video is their way of supporting proportional representation beyond the ballot.

The video was shot near Prospect Lake Elementary School by Mike Graeme.

As of November 23rd, Elections BC reports that approximately 30% of ballots have been returned.

The organization has extended the deadline for receiving ballots from the original date (November 30th) to December 7th, at 4:30 p.m. in light of rotating Canada Post strikes.
