Crew aboard the Coastal Celebration launched a rescue boat Monday evening after he radioed for help when his vessel began taking on water.
The Coast Guard and the BC Ferry vessel responded to the mayday to between Sidney and Portland Island.
Heavy weather hampered rescue efforts but ferry crews were able to pull the man to safety.
The BC Ferry vessel was travelling from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.
Remainder Sailings Cancelled
BC Ferries have cancelled the 9 p.m. sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay due to heavy winds.
The 8:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. sailings between Nanaimo’s Duke Point terminal and Tsawwassen are also cancelled.
A wind warning is in effect for much of Vancouver Island, including Greater Victoria. Southeast winds of 60 to 70 km/h gusting to 90 are forecast this evening.
