Here are the most popular baby names in British Columbia in 2018

On the eve of the new year, BC’s Ministry of Health has released the top baby names of 2018.

New parents stayed relatively traditional in their naming this year, according to the Vital Statistics Agency’s preliminary statistics, which account for children born January 1st 2018 to December 18th.

The most popular name for babies born in BC this year?

Liam!

According to Baby Center, Liam stands for “strong-willed warrior and protector”, and is a shortened form of the original Frankish name, Willahelm. Willahelm meant “helmet of will” and is also the root origin for William, of which Liam derives.

Just behind Liam for most popular baby names in the province are Olivia, Emma, Lucas and Oliver.

Last year, Olivia was the top name overall, and for the past six out of seven years, Olivia has held its spot as the most popular name for girls in BC.

The top 10 most popular boys names in BC this year are:

  1. Liam
  2. Lucas
  3. Oliver
  4. Benjamin
  5. Ethan
  6. Noah
  7. Logan
  8. William
  9. James
  10. Leo

Last year, Benjamin was the #1 boys name in BC. This year, the name “Leo” marks the only new addition to the top 10 list.

The top 10 most popular girls names in BC in 2018 are:

  1. Olivia
  2. Emma
  3. Amelia
  4. Charlotte
  5. Chloe
  6. Ava
  7. Sophia
  8. Isla
  9. Emily
  10. Hannah

New to the girls list this year is Isla.

According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 40,565 babies were born in BC this year, 19,821 girls and 20,744 boys.
