Saanich and Oak Bay firefighters were kept busy Sunday night as they battled a large fire at a residence being renovated near the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Firefighters were called to the two-storey home around 8:20 p.m. last night and contained the flames, which threatened to spread to nearby residences.

According to the Saanich fire department, there were no injuries reported as the home is under construction. The homeowner did arrive once alerted to the incident.

Saanich fire officials say that the blaze, which took place on the 2400 block of Trent Street, was reported by a young boy who passed by the scene while on his bicycle, and reported it to 911.

While the fire was contained, firefighters remain at the scene. Crews are waiting for further equipment, including an excavator, to tear down a section of the home as the bottom is still smoldering and unsafe to enter at this time.

The Saanich fire department says that the source of the fire is “undetermined” and that the investigation is still ongoing.

A single engine is still at the scene, and is expected to remain there all day.
