High winds have once again interrupted ferry service between and Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.
This afternoon, B.C. Ferries announced it had cancelled two Queen of New Westminster sailings on the following routes due to high winds:
- 12 p.m. departing Vancouver (Tsawwassen)
- 2 p.m. departing Vancouver Island (Swartz Bay)
A decision will be made for the 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm sailing closer to the time.
This is the fourth time this week high winds have forced the service to cancel sailings.
On Thursday, Vancouver Island and BC’s south coast was hit with one of the worst wind storms it has seen in recent years. Trees were blown over, boats drifted from their docks, and over 100,000 Vancouver Island residents were left without power.
Despite BC Hydro crews working around the clock to get things back up and running, as of Saturday afternoon, over 50,000 customers on the island are still experiencing outages because of the storm.
Another wind warning has been issued for most of Vancouver Island. A strong frontal system could bring up to 90 km/h winds.
They are expected to ease by Saturday evening.
