A single-vehicle collision claimed the life of an elderly man in Nanaimo on Saturday night.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. police responded to a crash near Poplar Street and Highway 19A. At the scene, investigators found the 73-year-old male driver deceased.

According to several witnesses, the 2012 Toyota Rav4 was travelling erratically just before the incident.

The vehicle was proceeding northbound along Highway 19A when it struck a median and several signs before turning on to Poplar Street where it then continued down an embankment and rolled, eventually coming to rest.

Police say that they do not believe alcohol, speed, or drugs were factors in the accident.

Investigators are considering that the driver may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash.

BC Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Analysts attended to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
