BC Coroners Service on scene of police incident on Pat Bay Highway (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Sidney/North Saanich RCMP media relations officer Cst. Meighan de Pass has confirmed that the incident was a medical emergency, and there is “no indication of any criminal matter or any public safety concerns.”

Officers are currently attempting to notify the family of the individual involved, and no further information will be revealed at this time.

Earlier:

Traffic heading northbound on the Pat Bay Highway was backed up this morning due to a police incident between Island View and Mount Newton Cross Road.

Emergency first responders including Central Saanich Police, and Sidney/North Saanich RCMP attended. BC Coroners Service were also on site.

Originally reported by various media outlets as a motor vehicle incident, sources now say that a medical emergency took place at around 8 a.m. on Friday morning.

Police are clearing the area as of the time of publication. Expect traffic delays northbound on Pat Bay Highway.

BC Coroner’s Service has confirmed that they are in the early stages of an investigation.
