A Port Alberni RCMP officer was injured on Saturday when trying to arrest an intoxicated and violent man.

At roughly 8:20 p.m. Saturday evening, the officer was responding to a report of a belligerent man who had threatened a cab driver and punched his taxi window.

The officer then went to the 6400 block of Withers Road and found the “highly intoxicated” man, and a woman, inside a residence.

Police say that the officer then tried to arrest the man for his incident with the cab driver, and when he did, the man became violent. Port Alberni RCMP says that the woman also then participated in the assault on the officer.

After matters escalated, more RCMP officers arrived at the residence, and together were able to take both the man and woman into custody.

The first attending officer was taken to hospital for significant but non-life threatening injuries, and has since been released.

One other officer was also treated for injuries during the arrest.

The man and the woman, 38-year-old Nanaimo resident Thomas Curtis Martin and 25-year-old Port Alberni resident Natasha Ebany Unseld-Sandulak, appeared before a judge on Tuesday.

They are facing charges of assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats towards an officer. Martin was also charged with resist or willfully obstructing a peace officer.

Police say that the investigation is now before the courts, and that no further information will be released.
