Two people killed in head-on crash in Nanaimo on Monday

Share

A fatal head-on collision that sadly claimed two lives in Nanaimo on Monday morning is being investigated by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC.

The incident happened just before 1:00 a.m. after a Nanaimo RCMP officer saw a white, GMC pick-up truck leaving a residence in the Harewood area.

The officer then caught up to the truck and attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop when the driver allegedly failed to stop and continued along the Trans Canada Highway.

Police say that the vehicle was last seen driving in the oncoming traffic lane of the highway, and a little later, the fatal head-on collision involving the truck was discovered.

The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit and RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS) are investigating the collision, and are asking anyone with information to contact the Nanaimo RCMP.

Meanwhile, the IIO is investigating the incident to determine whether or not police actions or inactions are linked to the drivers’ death.

Since the IIO are reviewing the collision, no further information can be released by police.
