Victoria driver suspected of impaired driving after vehicle crashes into hydro pole

Share

VicPD officers arrested and issued a 24-hour roadside prohibition for drugs to a Victoria man who crashed into a hydro pole at Burnside Rd W and Harriet Rd on Wednesday morning.

Witnesses told Victoria Buzz that immediately after the crash, several bystanders attempted to help him remove the vehicle from the pole, but that the driver used aggressive language and told them to go away.

When officers arrived on site, they issued the roadside prohibition and arrested the driver as it became evident that he may have been impaired by drug consumption.

By law, police are not required to request that a driver submit to a prescribed physical coordination test when issuing a 24-hour roadside prohibition, as officers are trained to recognize the effects of alcohol and drug consumption.

Upon issuance of the prohibition, the drivers’ licence is held at the police station to be retrieved once the 24-hours are up.

“The driver was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” said VicPD media spokesperson Cst. Matt Rutherford.

The incident is currently under investigation.
