Vancouver Island couple planning to ditch the snow for sun after winning $5M jackpot

A Port Alberni couple is looking to escape from Vancouver Island’s snowy streets to the warm waters of Mexico after matching all six numbers of Saturday’s $5 million Lotto 6/49 Draw jackpot.

Harold and Madelaine Thomas were the winners of last week’s draw, with their numbers being drawn on Saturday, February 10th.

According to Lotto 6/49, after winning the jackpot, Harold’s first question to Madelaine was if she wanted a new house. She quickly turned down the idea.

“No way! That’s where we raised our kids,” she said. “Plus, we have the best view in the city.”

“The biggest thing about this is being able to help the kids and grandkids out and make their lives a little easier,” Madelaine told Lotto 6/49. “Maybe one of our sons won’t have to go away to work anymore.”

Besides helping out the family, the duo has three plans for the immediate future. A new Volkswagen Tiguan for Madelaine, a 1966 Jaguar XKE for Harold, and a trip down to Mexico for some long overdue sun.

“It’s surreal,” said Harold. “When the clerk at the store checked the ticket, the machine froze and lit up $5,000,000.”

“It’s crazy! It’s still sinking in,” said Madelaine.

The couple purchased their winning ticket at the A-1 Convenience Store on Redford Street in Port Alberni.
