Not only is Victoria one of the world’s best cities for beer, we’re now officially home to some of the best gin in the world!
Sooke-based Sherringham Distillery just took home the coveted ‘Best Contemporary Gin in the World’ prize at the 2019 World Gin Awards.
This particular award seeks out the crème de la crème of “gins with flavour profiles where juniper is still discernible, but other flavours such as citrus, spice and floral notes are more prominent than in a traditional gin,” according to the official website.
The ceremony took place in London, on Thursday, February 21st, and the Vancouver Island craft distillery won out over 23 other competing gins from countries like Britain, U.S. and Germany.
Sherringham’s Senior Vice President, Terence Fitzgerald, was in London to accept the award at the official ceremony.
“I thought it was important for us to be at the ceremony supporting Canada and all its great craft distilleries,” Fitzgerald told Victoria Buzz.
“Then to see our name and bottle appear on the screen as the world’s best contemporary gin was truly amazing and overwhelming. I am so proud of Jason and Alayne, and the team.”
