Multiple fire crews have extinguished a fire that broke out on the lower floors of a downtown apartment building on Wednesday morning.

When firefighters arrived, smoke could be seen billowing out of a second floor balcony of a building on the corner of Blanshard and Cormorant Street, and people were evacuating from the building as the fire alarm was activated.

Once crews were situated, however, they quickly knocked down the blaze and are expected to wrap-up the scene soon.

“The fire has been contained and put out and we’re in mop up and ventilation stage,” said Dan Atkinson, Deputy Chief at the Victoria Fire Department.

Witnesses say that the at least 6 fire trucks were on the scene, and that firefighters deployed ladders to access the balcony while other members entered through the building.

Once the affected unit has been cleared, residents will be allowed to re-enter.
