Saanich police issue warning after bear cub spotted near Tillicum Mall

Saanich police are warning residents after several sightings of a bear were reported in the Tillicum Mall area Sunday morning.

In a release, police said they received several calls of a bear cub in the area of Cowper Street and Dysart Road.

“The bear is not aggressive and the Saanich Police would like to remind the community bear sightings are common this time of year,” said Cst. Nelofer Bromwich.

“As bear sightings increase, be sure to bear-proof your property, removing uneaten pet food, keeping trash inside until pick up day or keeping trash cans secured. Such steps help prevent bears from associating food with the presence of people and allows them to move on to avoid future problems,” Bromwich added.

While the cub is not showing signs of aggression, it is advised to be extra vigilant of your surrounding, your kids and pets.

Residents who spot bears in urban settings should report it to BC Conservation at 1-877-952.7277.
