Liberal candidate who withdrew from election still on ballot

Share

On Wednesday, Liberal candidate Cheryl Thomas withdrew from the October 19 election. The deadline to have a name removed from the ballot was September 28.

Elections Canada said Thursday it cannot tell voters Thomas has withdrawn, nor is it allowed to remind voters of this fact on election day.

According to spokeswoman Dorothy Sitek, nothing in the Canada Elections Act requests Elections Canada to inform electors, as the agency is simply the administrator of the election.

Cheryl Thomas withdrew after comments she made on Facebook years ago regarding events in the Middle East surfaced. The online publication True North Times featured a quote where Thomas called mosques “brainwashing stations.”

Victoria Green party candidate Jo-Ann Roberts hopes Liberal voters will consider the Greens. She said she is not concerned about vote splitting, as it was not an issue in this riding and according to Roberts, is less of an issue now.

NDP candidate Murray Rankin said his message will remain unchanged, focusing on changing the government and through more NDP seats in Parliament.
