On April 19, 2015, at approximately 1:53 pm, while West Shore RCMP officers were conducting a patrol in the parking lot of the Thetis Lake Park, in View Royal, they were approach by a family reporting a lost hiker. The family were hosting a 16 year old female international student who had gotten lost in the park while hiking for the last hour. The student had a cellphone with her and kept communicating with her hosting family. Police directed her to call 911 on her cell phone so that they could retrieve the GPS coordinates.

West Shore RCMP received a 911 call from the lost hiker, a GPS location was identified. She was told to remain where she was. The two members who were on scene hiked to the GPS location, using the GPS map on their cell phones and located the lost hiker, she was escorted out with only scratches and a scare.

Fortunately, she had her cell phone with her to call for help, states Constable Alex BERUBE, spokesperson of the West Shore RCMP. We also remind trail users to stick to the beaten path to ensure a safe outdoor experience.
