A 41 year-old Port Alberni man and father of four is back home this week after 7 days in a Vancouver Hospital recovering from a grizzly bear attack.

George Knoll is a forester who normally works in the Alberni Valley but due to the hot weather shut-down he took a job near Bella bella two weeks ago.

On his second day in the woods up Spiller Channel he was stringing tape down a hillside when he spotted the bear.

“And then a bear appeared, like 20 feet away, a big grizzly just kind of rose out of the ground. It was very eerie, you know, I looked over and there was this animal, right there. And then instantly my heart sank, I had nothing on me and I knew I was in trouble” Knoll told CHEK News reporter Dean Stoltz.
