Body found in a creek on Salt Spring Island now upgraded to a homicide

RCMP say the the death of a 45 year old Salt Spring Island man was a homicide. Joseph Patrick Bernie’s body was found floating in the waters of a creek near Fulford Harbour on Salt Spring Island by a recreational fisherman on October 15th.

An investigation by BC Coroners Service and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, determined the death of the 45 year old Salt Spring Island resident involved foul play.

There have been no arrests in the case but RCMP do not believe the to public to be at risk.

“We’re conscious of the impact this death has had on Joseph’s family, and the broader community on Salt Spring Island,” Sgt. George Jenkins said in a statement.

Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Joseph Patrick Bernie in the days leading up to October 10th, 2015, or if you have information which may be of assistance to investigators, to contact the Salt Spring RCMP at 250-537-5555, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
