On Thursday February 11th, 2016 the Moose Hide Campaign is hosting its 5th Annual Gathering to end violence towards Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women and children.

The event will start at 9:00 am and will be held at the Victoria Conference Centre, 720 Douglas St, Victoria, BC on the traditional territory of the Lkwungen people.

The 2016 Moose Hide Campaign Annual Gathering will provide healing spaces, ceremonies, and workshops that explore various strategies and tools to address violence against women and children.

At 12:00 noon there will be a Press Conference on the front steps of the BC Legislature where the National Leader of the White Ribbon Campaign and elected members of the BC Legislature will address the issue of violence against women and children. The National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and the role of men in ending gender based violence will be central themes in this event.

Violence against Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women and children is still a daily occurrence in many homes and communities in Canada including family violence, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Recently the Canadian government acknowledged the nearly 1200 murdered and missing Aboriginal women in Canada and has started the process of an inquiry to help heal the families left behind and find solutions to bring an end to these types of tragedies.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission tabled its final report in December 2015 and the 94 Calls to Action have provided a road map for Reconciliation across Canada. The Moose Hide Campaign embraces these Calls to Action and the recognition of the impacts of the residential school system.

We are determined to support activities that will end the cycle of violence that Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women and children continue to experience today.

The Moose Hide Campaign is encouraging Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men across Canada to participate in the annual Moose Hide Campaign event by participating in the one-day national Men’s fast to honour the women and children that are currently living in violence and to accelerate the healing process.

By refraining from eating or drinking for this one day it brings men together in solidarity, respect, honour and love for the women in our lives.

The Moose Hide Campaign is committed to ending violence towards women and children and will continue to bring this issue to the forefront of communities, organizations, and all levels of government.
