A ceremony will be held Wednesday morning between 8 am and 10 am for the HMCS Protecteur as it departs Esquimalt Harbour for the last time.

Crews worked over the weekend at CFB Esquimalt to ensure HMCS Protecteur is ready to be towed to Nova Scotia where it will be scrapped.

According to Lookout News, the disposal process, involves removing all electronics, communications, weaponry and other equipment onboard the vessel in accordance with the Surplus Crown Assets Act and the Treasury Board Directive on Disposal of Surplus Material.

The plan is to tow the vessels to the east coast where they will be dismantled.

Protecteur’s final destination is R.J. MacIsaac Construction facilities in Port Mersey, Nova Scotia. The company won a $39 million contract to dispose of the ship as well as HMCS Algonquin which will arrive in July.

The operation will involve towing the ships through the Panama Canal, and should arrive on the east coast around April 1, according to officials.

The HMCS Protecteur was in military service for almost 46 years and was involved in many important missions including the Cold War, Gulf War and hurricane relief.

HMCS Algonquin is undergoing the same process and will depart in April to the same facility.
