A week since two barges washed ashore on Victoria’s beloved Dallas road shoreline, haphazardly cordoned off by police tape and public works barricades, the large barge still remains.
On the weekend Victorians descended on the beach ignoring the orange and yellow signs, to check out what some referred to as Victoria’s “new water feature.”
There is no clear indication of when the barge containing construction materials from the Coho terminal construction, will be removed.
Transport Canada are yet to conduct a compliance inspection on the tug and operator, to see whether the Canada Shipping Act was violated and to approve a salvage plan.
Speaking on CFAX today, Mayor Lisa Helps said the situation may be an indication Victoria needs to improve its marine response plan.
“Probably we do need a better marine response plan for our region,” Helps said.
Another storm is rolling into Victoria today, and a Wind Warning has been issued by Environment Canada with winds expected to rise 60 to 80 km/h late this afternoon or early evening.
